Lessons from Sesame Street – Not Just for the Kids

My son’s new morning ritual is wake up, have breakfast, then watch Sesame Street. It makes me smile because I remember how much I loved Sesame Street as a kid myself and watching it with him brings back memories of my childhood….and who doesn’t like a trip down memory lane every once in a while?
The opening scene of today’s show has Grover trying to play an instrument, dance, play basketball, cook, and paint…all at the same time.  Grover wasn’t able to do any of it. He failed. He felt like he was not good at anything. It got me thinking about how many times I have fell into this same trap. How many times did I try to do too many things at once and not succeed at any of them? I’m afraid to admit, it happens to me more often than I’d like.

Then the human character, Mando, helps Grover understand that if he just focuses (WORD OF THE DAY!) on one activity at a time he will be able  to successfully complete it. And sure enough….that’s what happened.

So moms, when you are trying to exercise, meal plan, cook, clean the house, play with your kids, go to work, check email, send text messages, etc just remember you CAN’T DO IT ALL. You can try, but like Grover you will most likely fail and then you will feel bad about yourself. There is nothing worse than feeling like a failure! So, slow down….focus on ONE thing at a time…and you will be awesome!

Thanks, Sesame Street!
