Losing Extra Baggage – How One Overweight Single Mom Found Her Happy Ending

Pregnancy and motherhood is hard enough, especially for a first time mom, but when you are young and in a bad relationship those challenges can make the postpartum experience much more challenging. Meet Lauren, a former overweight single mother who turned her life around and found her happy ending. Here is her story:

Transformation“I had been living in Miami going to fashion design school, which was my dream, but when I found out I was pregnant I gave it all up and moved to Michigan to be with my boyfriend (my son’s father) at the time. I knew the first week I was there I had made a mistake, it was a verbally abusive relationship and I had become someone I didn’t recognize when I was with my son’s father (we were never married). I was very depressed and had a newborn at the age of 24. I was so unhealthy and felt so spiritually lost like I didn’t have a place for me and my son.

I joined a gym and Jenny Craig back in 2007  to try to feel like myself again. I lost about 50lbs doing that and I can honestly say that was the changing point in my life. That is when it clicked with me that my son and I didn’t deserve to be in such a bad environment and I didn’t have to feel alone. I can honestly say that fitness and nutrition saved my life.  After losing the weight, I got a job, and felt like my own person again and it gave me the courage to leave my relationship after suffering for 2 years, and start over with my son. I moved back home and started to rebuild my life and to give my son the life he deserved. I truly believe if you are happy and healthy your children will be too. It was very scary being a single mom with a 1.5 year old, but I was so blessed to have my parents around for support.Wedding red door

In 2011 I met my husband and his daughter, Riley, and now our family is complete. We are such a great family unit and the kids adore each other!

Recently I still had about 10lbs I wanted to lose, so I joined a challenge group my friend Sarah was hosting through Beachbody and I fell in love!! I knew I wanted to be a coach and help inspire and motivate other women just like me on their wellness journey, whatever that would be!! I am loving every minute of meeting new women and building such great relationships with them and making such wonderful friends.

I now also participate in Ultra Runs. I have participated in 50k’s up in Black Mountain, NC as well as a 50 mile run, called Delirium. I love running…I run 6 miles everyday during my lunch at work. It just helps me clear my head and then I do a long run on Saturday mornings usually around 15-20 miles. The best part of my running is when I met my best friend/co-worker, Guy, and we run together everyday at work and on Saturdays. We joke that we solve all of our problems during our runs, but it sure does feel like it. He has also fitmombeen a blessing in my life. He met me when I was a single mom and was always like a big brother to me (because he is 20 years older). He and his wife take trips with me and my husband, Jeremy and we do our Ultra races together!!

I never would have thought I would find my happy ending, but if you set your mind to it you can change your life. That is the beauty of this world…you have control of who you are…so us women should own it and learn from our mistakes because they only make us stronger!”
